Lake Wakatipu

For the last few days of our trip to New Zealand last month we were based in Queenstown which sits on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The road on the north side of the lake runs to Glenorchy, a settlement of a little over 300 according to the last census. The road runs a little further, primarily serving walkers but we took the scenic drive as far as the settlement, had a stroll, took in the scenery and then made the most of a local coffe bar before returning to Queenstown.

Auckland Waterfront

Much of the former wharves area of Auckland waterfront is gradually being converted to up market residential and recreational use and is now a pleasant place for a gentle stroll. Here are a few pictures of the area.

Mount Eden

Mount Eden is in the heart of Auckland and offers fabulous views over the city and surrounding areas. It is a defunct volcanic peak. It is possible to drive fairly close to the the summit and then there is a short steep climb to the top with a walkway and viewing area built around the former crater.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay is effectively part of Auckland. I would call it an affluent suburb but its free to drive in and wander around so we popped by and lowered the tone a little! It's autumn now in NZ but were lucky with some glorious sunshine. Sun cream is back in the UK of course.
